|In 40 x 40 m plots with a pheromone-baited tree in the centre, attack by the mountain pine beetle was significantly reduced when either a three-component non-host angiosperm bark volatile blend or the anti-aggregation pheromone verbenone were deployed at 16 points with 10 m centres. However, there was no additive or synergistic effect of adding the non-host volatiles to verbenone. When verbenone plus the non-host volatile blend were deployed at 36 points with 10 m centres in 50 x 50 m blocks superimposed on permanent sampling plots maintained by Lignum Ltd., attack was held below 10% of available trees on eight of 10 plots. We recommend that in the future, non-host volatiles not be used operationally in combination with verbenone, and that the efficacy of verbenone be improved by using it in conjunction with pheromone-baited trees in a push-pull tactic.|
