Project lead: Houston Forest Products Co.
Imprint: [Bulkley Valley?], BC : [Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection], 2004
Subject: Forest Investment Account (FIA), Moose, Habitat, British Columbia
Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Land Base Investment Program
Description:
With significant reductions in Forest Investment Account funding levels for 2003-04 to the Morice and Lakes IFPA, continued funding for the Bulkley Valley Moose Habitat Assessment project was not possible. After review of a revised 2003-04 Proposed Work Plan, Houston Forest Products committed $10,000 (FIA) to assist in retrieval and download of five Lotek GPS collars needing retrieval and replacement. The Ministry of Water, Land and Air protection committed funding to refurbish or replace the retrieved GPS collars. Objectives • Retrieve and refurbish or replace 5 Lotek collars deployed on project study moose between January and March 31, 2004. • Download data from GPS collars. Results • Three of a possible four Lotek GPS collars were retrieved February 3, 2004. • Four GPS collars were deployed February 3, 2004. • One remaining GPS collar will hopefully be retrieved during April 2004. • Data was downloaded from the three retrieved GPS collars March 28. 2004. Conclusion The Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection is very appreciative of fund sharing retrieval/refurbishment and re-deployment costs for collared moose ( Bulkley Valley Moose Habitat Assessment Project) with Houston Forest Products. Without a partnership or securement of outside funding, it was very unlikely that retrieved GPS collars could be replaced. Subject to available funds, the ministry’s aim is still to complete this project in hopes of providing benefit in terms of increased understanding of relationships between moose, moose winter range and associated resource development activities.
