Abstract

This project is part of a long term Council of the Haida Nation initiative to restore culturally important and ecologically rare plants on Haida Gwaii. The purpose of the project funded by TERP was to promote restoration of plants and habitats impacted by introduced Sitka Black tailed deer, by erecting fenced around selected sites. Deer have seriously damaged forest ecosystems on the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii). These deer exclosures were an incremental step in a deer management strategy for Haida Gwaii. The restoration of specific sites is a necessary first step in increasing the knowledge base and awareness about the impacts of deer browse on local ecosystems, and will contribute to a better understanding of the restoration needs on Haida Gwaii. This project included a literature review and information synthesis, exclosure site selection based on various criteria (including cultural use, accessibility and rare Sitka spruce plant association), vegetation surveys, the construction of three deer exclosures (totalling 2.5 hectares), and a summary report including site prescriptions and recommendations for further restoration work. A guide to completing vegetation surveys at the enclosures was also created.
The project report is available from the Ministry library: Gray, J. and H. Hammond. 2002. Haida Resource Restoration Program CHN Forest Ecosystem Restoration Project. Submitted to Forest Renewal BCs Terrestrial Ecosystem Restoration Program by Council of the Haida Nation.
