Abstract

The Churn Creek Protected Area is the most significant grassland protected area west of the Rockies, and the bunchgrass grasslands within occur at the most northern extent of this large arid and semi-arid area, making it one of a kind in Canada. The protected area also sustains regionally significant wildlife populations. Past fire suppression has created unnatural conditions within the grassland ecosystem. The native grasslands are slowly being replaced by encroaching forest cover, particularly Douglas-fir. The purpose of this project was to develop a burn plan for 702 hectares in Churn Flats, for a prescribed burn in 2002. A plan is necessary to refine objectives for the burn, and to take pre-burn data to allow the success of the burn to be measured. The burn plan will help determine if the prescribed burn realized its goal by destroying encroaching forest cover so as to restore the natural grassland ecosystem, with resultant benefits for the flora and fauna within the parks, particularly red and blue listed species and their habitat. Not only will this plan allow the success of the burn to be measured, it will also act as a guide for future proponents who wish to carry out prescribed burns on Crown land. The plan is available from the Ministry library: Blackwell, B.A., R.W. Gray & K. Iverson. 2001. Prescribed Burn Plan for Churn Creek Flats. Submitted to BC Parks by B.A. Blackwell & Associates, R.W.
