    Twenty year effects of mechanical site preparation on conifer survival, growth, and predicted yield in boreal and sub-boreal British Columbia

We will report on 18 - 20 year white spruce (Picea glauca) survival and growth responses to various types of mechanical site preparation (MSP) in boreal regions of north-central British Columbia. Growth and yield simulations will be conducted to compare the effects of MSP treatments on predicted timber volume over a rotation. Reporting will concern the Iron Creek and Inga Lake sites in the BWBSmw1 biogeoclimatic variant, which are part of a large-scale site preparation study that was initiated in the mid-1980s (FRDA 1.10). We will produce a journal article and an associated extension note. We consider this work to be a “synthesis” of knowledge because it will employ a current modeling tool and long-term conifer response data to compare predicted outcomes for various MSP techniques over a rotation. It will also provide the opportunity to compare 18-20 year results with those that were anticipated on the basis of data collected 3-5 years after treatment.
The use of MSP has declined in British Columbia since 1990, mainly because of the perceived high cost and the potential for site degradation. However, there are indications that moderate use of such treatments can be cost-effective and beneficial to the future timber supply (Hawkins et al. 2006). Our work will complement the Hawkins et al. study and contribute to the overall ability to weigh economic and biological costs and benefits associated with MSP treatments in north-central BC. It is important that we report long-term results for these studies because recent work is suggesting that conifer responses at year 20 differ from those that were anticipated on the basis of early results (e.g., Boateng et al. 2006). Concurrent with this synthesis proposal, we are submitting a “New Research” proposal to conduct soils and foliar nutrient sampling at two sites, one of which is Iron Creek. Similar soils data has previously been collected and reported on for Inga Lake (Macadam and Kabzems 2006), and the results will contribute to our ability to interpret conifer responses
