Records Management Standards and Procedures
6.1 Overview
General
A records schedule is a “timetable” that specifies the length of time a
record must be retained before it is eligible for final disposition. In addition,
schedules specify how records eligible for disposition are to be processed.
Specifically, schedules prescribe:
- the record’s active retention period (i.e., length of time the record will
be retained as an active record)
- the record’s semi-active retention period (i.e., the length of time a
record will be retained in semi-active storage prior to final disposition)
- details of the record’s final disposition (i.e., what will be done with the
record after semi-active storage -- destruction, transfer to Archives)
Scheduling ensures that records are stored or disposed of to optimize
accessibility and cost effectiveness.
Standards
Compliance With ARCS/ORCS
