Chapter 3 - Records Classification

Section 3.1 - Overview

Effective: March 31, 1995
Updated: September 15, 1997

General

Records classification systems provide: The Ministry of Forests uses the following systems:

Administrative Records Classification System (ARCS) is used to classify records pertaining to the administrative, or "housekeeping," activities of the ministry. Administrative records are related to such functions as personnel, finance, facilities management, equipment and supplies, general administration, and automated technology. Because administrative functions are common to all ministries, ARCS is a government-wide records classification system. Refer to the NEWBCIMSNEW Administrative Records Classification System manual, "Introduction and Guidelines," for a detailed description of ARCS.

Operational Records Classification System (ORCS) is used to classify records pertaining to the continuing operations and services provided by a ministry. Operational functions are unique to each ministry, and therefore each ministry must develop its own ORCS based on standards developed by BCARS. Refer to the MOF Operational Records Classification System manual for a detailed description of the MOF ORCS. Refer to the NEWBCIMSNEW Records and Information Management Manual, 5.5/04, for government-wide ORCS standards.
