Section 2.4 - Training/Information

General
This section summarizes records management training available within the
ministry and from other sources. It also identifies sources for current
ministry records management information.
Ministry Records Management Training Modules
Records custodians are responsible for providing training to their staff,
however the MRO will assist with providing training when necessary.
Those wishing to attend any of the following modules should send a
message to RMHELP (see "Information Sources" heading) or contact the
Ministry Records Officer (phone [250] 387-3446).
Introduction to Records Management
A basic course designed for those who have not had any other ministry
records management training or are new to the ministry.
Subjects covered:
- an introduction to records management
- records classification systems (ARCS/ORCS)
- file operations
- Freedom of Information (FOI) overview
- resources and services provided by the MOF Records Management Section
Duration: 3 hours
Records Creation and Classification
An intermediate course designed for personnel who process existing
records. This is a more detailed view of the classification system and
records schedules. The module’s objective is to provide personnel with the
tools necessary to ensure that documents are properly coded and that
records are processed according to retention schedules.
Duration: 1 day
Document Management
An introductory course on handling the variety of materials a records custodian will encounter. Subjects covered:
- what really needs to be filed
- handling confidential material
- circulated materials
Duration: 4 hours
Records Management Administration
An advanced course designed for records custodians or personnel
responsible for records management within a group.
Subjects covered:
- the registration process
- records transfer and disposal
- boxing of records and forms completion
- records security
- procurement of supplies
Duration: 1 day
Non-ministry Training
The following institutions provide records management training:
Camosun College, Victoria
Douglas Community College, Vancouver
The following association provides records management training:
Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) -- offers a
nine-month self-study course to ARMA members.
Information Sources
The following records management information sources are available
to MOF personnel:
BBRMAN Bulletin Board
Provides current procedures, standards, and general information regarding
records management. To access, from the Office Vision dot prompt, type
BBRMAN.
RMHELP Office Vision ID
A forum for MOF personnel to offer comments and suggestions regarding
records management issues. To use from OV "send note" function, type
RMHELP in the "to" field.
