Scope

This policy covers the requirements for Forest Service fire management plans.


Policy

The Forest Service will have approved fire management plans which are consistent with land and resource management objectives.

Fire management plan procedures and standards may be adapted to meet specific Branch, regional, and district objectives.

Definition

A fire management plan is a document that contains specific goals, objectives, and standards for the use, application, and control of fire to meet land and resource management objectives.

Plan Scope

As a statement of fire policy and action, fire management plans will include standards and objectives for:

  • the use of fire in land and resource management, including but not limited to fuel management and smoke management
  • pre-suppression
  • initial attack
  • continued attack
  • safe work procedures

Plans may include maps, charts, tables, and statistics.

Approval

Plans will be approved prior to April 15 of each year if strategies, tactics, and procedures are:

  • realistic
  • cost-effective
  • consistent with land and resource management objectives
