Scope

This policy covers the management of smoke emissions from prescribed burns that are regulated by Forest Service permits.


Policy

The Forest Service will develop and maintain smoke management plans for each region and district that ensures that air quality standards are maintained.

Smoke Management Plans

Smoke management plans will include but are not limited to the identification of:

  • smoke sensitive areas
  • modified burning zones
  • strategies and techniques to minimize smoke emissions
  • the use of weather forecasts, ventilation indices, and fire weather indices
  • public notification procedures
