Scope

This policy defines the broad framework governing the authorization of firewood cutting for personal use on Crown land ( Forest Act, s.48).

Policy

It is the policy of this Ministry to:

  • recognize the public demand for firewood as an alternate source of heating energy
  • encourage people to recover logging residue, non-commercial timber, and damaged or dead timber for firewood
  • direct firewood cutting activity into areas of Crown land that require rehabilitation measures following primary logging operations
  • refer people to small sawmills for permission to collect slabs and edgings

Firewood Areas

The District Manager may identify and designate areas suitable for firewood cutting either within logged areas of existing harvesting authority, with the licensee's prior consent, or on areas of Crown land that require a clearance in order to issue a cutting authority.

Free Use Permit

The District Manager will issue free use permits to persons eligible to cut firewood for their own use, to a maximum volume of 50m3 ( Forest Act, s.49).

The free use permit must be carried by the permittee while cutting and transporting firewood from the area.

Wildlife Trees

The District Manager will explain the wildlife tree concept and ask that the applicant not cut or remove any trees that have been posted with wildlife tree signs.
