Scope

This policy contains guidelines for the proper and safe use of pesticides.

Policy

The Ministry's use of pesticides will be carefully managed in order to maintain the safety of the public and pesticide-handling staff. Protection of the environment and forest resources must be ensured.

Pesticides

Pesticides are substances registered under the federal Pest Control Products Act for specified uses against unwanted vegetation, insects, and other organisms. (Pesticides is a generic term that includes insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.)

Reasons for Pesticide Use

Pesticides may be required for:

  • protection of seed trees, seed orchards, and cone crops
  • protection of forest nursery stock
  • protection of growing and mature stands
  • protection of commercially valuable range lands
  • protection and preservation of trees with high economical, recreational, or historical value

Responsible Use of Pesticides

Biological and chemical pesticides must be responsibly transported, used, stored, and disposed of. Only fully authorized Ministry employees with the necessary skills, experience, and equipment may handle pesticides. The Ministry accepts full responsibility for the results of the work of any authorized Ministry employee who uses pesticides with due care under official direction.

Public Involvement

The Ministry will provide the public with information on the forestry use of pesticides.
