Scope

This policy covers the program for prevention, reduction, and control of stress symptoms following a critical incident.

Policy

The Ministry will provide a Critical Incident Stress Management Program (CISMP) which includes:

  • education and prevention
  • organized intervention for those suffering critical incident stress
  • a resource and referral network

Specially selected and trained volunteer employees, working in conjunction with designated mental health personnel, will provide immediate support and assistance to Forest Service personnel exposed to a critical incident.

Definition

Critical incidents are events which may cause personnel to experience unusually strong emotional reactions that have the potential to interfere with their ability to function at the time of the incident or later. Critical incidents include death of a fellow employee, serious injury to co-workers or acquaintances, or severe threatening situations faced by personnel.

Target Group

CISMP is specifically for those employees exposed to a critical incident, and not for employees suffering from cumulative stress.

Funding

Funding for all associated costs, including provincial mental health specialists, will be provided by the Human Resources Branch, Accident Prevention Section.
