Preface

Three companion documents have been developed to address the management of Identified Wildlife. Under the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act, Identified Wildlife are those species and plant communities that have been approved by the chief forester and deputy minister of Environment, Lands and Parks or designate as requiring special management.

Species and Plant Community Accounts for Identified Wildlife provides a summary of the status, ecology, distribution and habitat requirements for each identified species or plant community. This document is a resource document for government planners, foresters and wildlife managers as well as for those interested in the ecology of Identified Wildlife. It provides the background material for the following two documents.

General Wildlife Measures for Identified Wildlife outlines specific management practices for identified species or plant communities. General wildlife measures have been approved by the chief forester and deputy minister of Environment, Lands and Parks. These are mandatory requirements that must be followed within approved wildlife habitat areas, or applied in a larger geographic unit, where approved. This may be necessary to protect specific habitat elements that are distributed throughout the landscape. This document is intended to be used by forest and range planners in the preparation of operational plans.

Procedures for Establishing Wildlife Habitat Areas for Identified Wildlife describes the process for developing a wildlife habitat area and outlines the role of government in this process. It also describes higher level plan recommendations for those Identified Wildlife that have been determined to require landscape level planning and special consideration within higher level plans. This document was prepared for government staff interested in or involved in the establishment and designation of wildlife habitat areas.

Together, these documents provide the necessary information and provisions to manage those species at risk from forest and range practices whose needs are not adequately addressed by other Forest Practices Code guidebooks or regulations.
