Surficial geology maps/soils maps

An index of surficial geology and soils maps for B.C. is available from Crown Publications and Maps BC, respectively. Historically, the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks produced the surficial geology maps as part of its Resource Mapping Branch. Subsequent surficial geology work has been conducted by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources (effective March 1996 - now Ministry of Employment and Investment - Energy and Minerals Division) (EMPR). An index of provincial soils maps is also available.

The EMPR publication is referenced as:

Bedrock geology maps

Bedrock Geology Maps for British Columbia have been produced by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and by the Geological Survey Branch (BCGS) of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources (effective March 1996 - now Ministry of Employment and Investment - Energy and Minerals Division).

The GSC maps cover all of the province at a scale of 1:250 000, which is adequate for completing the CWAP. The BCGS geology maps have been produced for areas of active mineral exploration or mining activity and are published at a scale of 1:50 000. As well, the BCGS has recently produced geology maps in digital form for large portions of the province (Cariboo, Kootenay, Skeena-Nass, and Vancouver Island are currently available). These maps are compilations at 1:250 000 of the most recent geological mapping available. A digital bibliographic index of BCGS publications (1874-1993) is available from Crown Publications.

GSC maps are available from:
