Objectives:

To measure the resistance to white pine blister rust of each of 8 genetic entries.  Genetic entries NO, NS, SR, CD and MO are representative of seedlots that will come from the Ministry of Forests seed orchard near Vernon beginning about 2004.

Experimental Design:

Treatments

  • Eight genetic entries are being tested:
    • Four resistance mechanisms (NO, NS, SR and CD)
    • Improved Moscow (Idaho),
    • Full-sib from selected parents,
    • Open pollinated, representing 7 wild collected seedlots, and four Pope and Talbot selected seedlots.

NO no spots
NS needle shed
SR slow rust
CD canker dead
MO Moscow (Idaho)
FS Full-sib
WS open pollinated wild seedlot
PT Pope and Talbot (4 wild selected trees)

Layout:

  • Randomized complete block design.
  • Each block has 100 tree square plots of the 8 genetic entries, with a total of 26, 21 and 23 plots for the above 3 sites respectively
  • The genetic entries are identified stake labels in the centre of the plots, and a large sign at the site entrance.

History:

  • 1996 - 1997 stock production (1 yr. 211, 1 yr. 515D)
  • 1997 Site preparation
  • 1998 Spring planting
  • 1999 Plantation condition reassessed
  • 2000 Survival evaluation
  • 2001 Annual maintenance

Status: Active

Reports and Publications: None

Comments: Survival in 1999 was better than 95% except at Burton Creek where survival averaged 75% with drought suspected as the major cause of mortality.
