Objectives:

  • To determine the feasibility of plantation creation on dry sites after using various techniques of site preparation.

Experimental Design:

Treatments:

  • Five methods of site preparation are being tested: ripper tooth plough, hand screef, power screef, disk trench and spot application of glyphosate.
  • Three species are also being tested: lodgepole pine, Douglas fir and larch.

Layout:

  • There are three blocks, with six lines of each of the mechanical treatments crossing them.
  • The two screef treatments were created between the two mechanical treatments.
  • Within each treatment, are two lines of each species, with 35 seedlings in each line.
  • The herbicide treatment was created adjacent to the mechanical treatments.
  • There are two lines of 75 seedlings. Only lodgepole pine was planted in this treatment.

History:

  • 1987 Site preparation
  • 1988 Manual treatments and plantation establishment
  • 1988 - 1992 Annual seedling assessments

Status: Dormant
