Objectives:

The objective of the project is to determine the effect of precommercial thinning on the incidence of crop tree infection and mortality by A. ostoyae, P. weirii and I. tomentosus.

Experimental Design:

There are eight A. ostoyae installations (Nelson - 3, Vancouver - 3, Kamloops - 1 and Cariboo - 1),  two for P. weirii (Vancouver and Kamloops) and one for I. tomentosus in Prince George.

Layout:
At each location, ten 20 m by 20 m plots with a 5 m-wide buffer were laid out. Crop trees were selected according to MoF specifications, and were tagged, measured and mapped. Plots were randomly assigned to thinned and control treatments. Crop trees are assessed biennially for symptoms of root disease.

History:.

  • 1992 - Lussier and Kidd installations established
  • 1994 - Fitzstubbs installation established.
  • 1996 - 1998 - Installations are assessed biennially
  • 1999 - Kidd Creek and Lussier River installations assessed
  • 2000 - Fitzstubs installation assessed
  • 2001 - Check mortality at Kidd Creek and Lussier River

Status: Active

Reports and Publications: none to date

Comments:

So far there has been little detectable effect of thinning
