Objectives:

  • To determine the effectiveness of three seed mixes in controlling the redevelopment of local species following two methods of site preparation.
  • To assess the effect of the redeveloping species complex on the growth and survival of planted seedlings.
  • To relate the success of the seeded species to the seedbed environment.
  • To contribute to a framework for predicting seeding prescriptions.

Experimental Design:

Treatments

Three seed mixes (plus a control) were used. They contained white dutch clover, creeping red fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass, and dwarf orchard grass in varying proportions. The mixes can be characterized as "no rye", "no fescue" and "high rye".

Layout:

  • Frisby Ridge
  • Boulder Creek
  • Three 40 m by 60 m blocks were established at each location.
  • Each treatment was randomly assigned to one of four 10 m by 60 m plots within a block.
  • Three lines of spruce were planted within each plot, and 30 seedlings in each plot were randomly selected for assessment.

History:

  • 1991 - Establishment and Assessment
  • 1992 - Assessment and report
  • 1993 - Assessment and report
  • 1994 - Assessment and report
  • 1995 - Assessment and final report

Status: Dormant
