Project Title: Species Screening Trial on a Low Impact Burn
Project Number: EP 1116.01
District: Columbia Forest District
Location: Big Eddy Creek (Revelstoke)
Lat. 51 20'N Long. 118 30'W

Objectives:

  • To assess the potential of selected species (alone and in simple mixes) to establish within a low impact burn.
  • To assess the effect of the seeded species on the redeveloping local species, and on planted seedlings.
  • To relate the success of the seeded species to the seedbed environment.
  • To develop a framework to predict the success of future seeding treatments

Experimental Design:

Treatments:

Four grass species were used alone and in simple combinations.

  • Control
  • White dutch clover @ 14 kg/ha
  • Creeping red fescue @ 19 kg/ha
  • Perennial rye @ 50 kg/ha
  • Dwarf orchard grass @ 17 kg/ha

Layout:

There are three 50 m by 50 m blocks, each divided into five 10 m strips running N-S and five 10 m strips running E-W. Each strip was sown with a randomly selected species. The study was planted with spruce and 10 seedlings in each plot were randomly selected for assessment. A plot is the intersection of one N-S strip and one E-W strip.

History:

  • 1990 - Establishment and Assessment
  • 1991 - Assessment and report
  • 1992 - Assessment and report
  • 1993 - Assessment and report
  • 1994 - Final assessment and report

Status: Dormant
