Objective:

To determine the effects of initial espacement (plantation density) on the growth and yield of lodgepole pine.

Experimental Design:

Treatments:

Five espacements (500, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500 trees per hectare) are tested.

Layout:

  • Randomized complete-block design
  • Three replicates (blocks), each consisting of five treatment plots
  • Plots are square, variable in size (depending on espacement) and contain 12 rows of 12 trees.

History:

  • 1988 plantation establishment
  • 1989-1991 routine maintenance
  • 1992 first five-year assessment
  • 1994 Establishment and five-year progress report.
  • 1997 second five-year assessment
  • 1998 tenth year progress report
  • 1999 classified biogeoclimatically.

Status: Active

Reports and Publications:

Johnstone, W. D. 1994. An espacement trial of lodgepole pine. BC. Min. For., Res. Br., Victoria, BC. Unpublished establishment and progress report. 12 pp.

Comments:

Five growing seasons after establishment the plots are fully stocked. As a result of animal damage, particularly in Block 1, some beat-up planting, from an on-site reserve plantation, was required. Data and photographs are on file at KRS.
