Project Title: Response of Young Lodgepole Pine to Spring and Fall Applications of Urea and Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer
Project Number: EP 886.04 Installation #2
District: Rocky Mountain Forest District
Location: Mt. Sabine
Lat. 50 12'N - Long. 115 46'W

Objectives:

  • To compare differences in growth response due to nitrogen source and season of application in young, thinned lodgepole pine.
  • To examine the nature of a N source x season of application interaction.
  • To obtain soil and foliar analysis data to assist in deficiency diagnosis and the interpretation and prediction of fertilization response.

Experimental Design:

Treatments:

  • control (i.e., thinned but not fertilized)
  • 200 kg N/ha (as urea) applied in the fall
  • 200 kg N/ha (as ammonium nitrate) applied in the fall
  • 200 kg N/ha (as urea) applied in the spring
  • 200 kg N/ha (as ammonium nitrate) applied in the spring

Layout:

  • Each treatment is applied to fifteen, 5-m radius "single- tree" plots (5 treatments *15 reps/treatment = 75 plots) arranged in a completely randomized design.
  • The stand was 22 years old at the time of installation establishment.
  • The stand was thinned in 1982 (two years before installation establishment).

History:

  • 1984 Installation establishment, fall fertilization,
  • 1985 Spring fertilization and assessment of 1st year foliar mass response
  • 1987-1996 Assessments on three-year cycle

Status: Dormant
