Objectives:

To evaluate to the growth and adaptability of:

  • coastal x interior Douglas-fir hybrids, and
  • Douglas-fir seedlots from the Submaritime (SSM) zone

on productive, low elevation sites in the southern Interior.

Experimental Design:

Genetic entries included in test (160 total):

Genetic Origin

Geographic Origin

# of Families

wind pollinated (wp) single-tree collections Submaritime zone - seedlots collected along latitudinal and elevational transects 116
full-sib families Coastal Douglas-fir - controlled crosses of high breeding value parents from Fdc breeding program 12
Fdc x Fdi hybrids High breeding value Fdc female parents and Fdi WKL/SA male parents. Crosses made at CLRS. 6
wp single-tree collections Shuswap Lake 12
wp single-tree collections West Kootenay low elevation 11
Fdi x Fdc hybrids High breeding value Fdi female parents and Fdc male parents. Crosses made at KFC. 2
full-sib family Shuswap Adams cross made at KFC 1

Field Layout:

Randomized complete-block design with eight replicate blocks. The genetic entries were randomly subdivided into 4 sets of 32 entries; sets were randomly assigned to positions in blocks; genetic entries were randomly assigned to four-tree row plots within sets. Sampling units are individual trees spaced at 2 x 1 m. White stakes identify corners.

History:

  • 1997 plantations established.
  • 1999 plantation brushed and third-year measurements.
