INTRODUCTION
This extension note documents progress to date on the
group selection silvicultural systems research trial in the Engelmann spruce-subalpine
fir subzone (ESSFwc3), near Likely, B.C. Background information on this
project is described in Extension Notes #9 and #14.
SUMMARY
This silvicultural systems trial is specifically focused
on producing a tested system, which will maintain caribou habitat while
allowing for timber harvesting. To succeed it must be ecologically and
silviculturally sound, as well as operationally viable. Although much work
still needs to be done, this research is well on the way to providing managers
with another integrated management tool for high elevation forests.
