Stewardship - Geomatics

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support ministry business needs by locating, identifying, depicting and analysing spatial information. For example, identifying and depicting features builds understanding and knowledge of land use and land use patterns. Analysing often combines several pieces of land based information to summarize and support the forested land manager’s decision making.

Within the Southern Interior Forest Region, our primary roles are:

  • To provide GIS support to both the regional office and the 12 forest districts within our area to help meet their operational requirements.
  • Identify requirements for improved data quality, standards, access, understanding, and collection, and provide coordination and workload to achieve these requirements.
  • Lead a regional team of geomatics specialists and identify and work to resolve common geomatics issues across the region and provincially.
  • Work with multiple districts and/or regional teams to streamline and standardize geomatics processes and functions.
  • Liaison with districts to encourage communication, information sharing, and sharing of expertise among geomatics staff.
NOTE: We do not provide mapping or GIS support to the public or private companies.

Geomatics (definition)

The term "Geomatics" is a portmanteau word which is a blend or fusing of the words "Geographic" and "Informatics".  Another example of a portmanteau word is "animatronics" from "animated" and "electronics".  As such, you will not find the word "Geomatics" in your English dictionaries.
