Introduction

The British Columbia Forest Program monitors incidence of bark beetles and defoliators through aerial overview surveys. The regional forest health team (Lorraine Maclauchlan, Leo Rankin, Art Stock, Michelle Cleary, and Kevin Buxton) oversee operational and research projects to deal with Entomology and Pathology issues within the Southern Interior Region. The Southern Interior Region (SIR) covers an extremely diverse area. This area includes: desert, drybelt, moist, alpine, and sub alpine ecosystems. With this diversity comes a range of potentially damaging pests. These include various species of fungi, bark beetles, defoliators such as western hemlock looper, western spruce budworm, and many pests affecting young stands.
