Research Programs

In the Northern Interior Forest Region, research is conducted in the following fields of study:
  • Silviculture research, which examines the impacts of forest management Practices on stand establishment, structure, growth and long-term dynamics.

  • Forest health research, which examines the effects of insects and diseases, focuses on the operational problems in managing affected stands and evaluates treatment options.

  • Ecology research, which guides the management of forest resources to support integrated resource management and to help sustain natural ecosystem processes.

  • Wildlife research, which provides information and advice to operations staff on silvicultural systems, wildlife-tree retention, post-harvesting prescriptions and other management Practices to maintain wildlife habitat and biodiversity.

  • Earth sciences research, which assesses the impact of forest Practices on natural processes and helps design management solutions to achieve sustainable integrated resource management.

Current research projects include studies of long-term soil productivity, windthrow, natural disturbance ecology, riparian buffers on streams, riparian landscapes, sheep browsing, aspen growth, forest bird use of wildlife tree patches and terrain attributes.
