Dave
Coates: B.S.F. (UBC), M.Sc. (OSU), Ph.D. (UBC),
RPF
Research Silviculturist (Smithers Office) Dave has held the position of Research Silviculturist in Smithers since 1989. His research interests include: linking tree population dynamics to ecosystem processes, canopy understory interactions, spatially-explicit stand dynamics, gap dynamics and simulation modeling. He has undertaken an integrated program of empirical studies that are linked to simulation modeling (SORTIE). Linking field studies to models provides insight into long-term forest response to natural or human disturbances, and will help us to understand the consequences and trade-offs involved in the use of different silvicultural strategies in managed forests.

Kabzems: B.S.A. (U Sask), BSc. (U Sask), MSc. (UBC) P.Ag. RPF
Research Silviculturist (Dawson Creek office) Richard conducts research in long term soil productivity, plant ecology, alternative silviculture systems, and broadleaf and mixedwood management in the boreal forests of north-eastern B.C. Research results and new technology information are passed on to operational staff from both government and industry through office presentations, field tours, conferences, seminars and a variety of publications.

Phil
LePage: B.S.F. (UBC), M.Sc. (OSU), RPF
Research Silviculturist (Smithers Office) Phil has worked in the research section since 1986 and has an extensive background in forest regeneration research on both interior and northern coastal sites. He is involved in assessing the impact of different types of partial cutting systems on stand composition, structure, and developmental dynamics. His current research interests focus on the establishment, growth, development, and structural patterns of mixed-species transitional and interior forests and how these ecosystems are affected by different management systems. Phil is also examining the implications of the mountain pine beetle epidemic on future forest management practices in the north-central interior. He also maintains the research section web site, publishes the on-line extension notes, and maintains the Northern Interior research plot location database. |
