Silviculture is the practice of
controlling forest establishment,
composition, and growth.
Silviculture is an applied science
that requires a synthesis of
knowledge about forest dynamics,
mensuration, ecology, plant
physiology, soils and entomology. It
is in the practice of silviculture
that much of the scientific
knowledge about forests is applied.
Silviculture research is an
important component of the Ministry
of Forest's commitment to the
sustainable management of BC's
forests and the Coast Forest Region
Research Section has been a leader
in silviculture research for many
decades. By improving our
understanding of the impacts of
silvicultural practices on tree
growth and forest dynamics, we
provide forest managers with the
tools and information to make sound
resource management decisions. |

| Rod's areas
of responsibility include research
in forest fire ecology, alternative
and conventional silvicultural
systems; and the provision of
consulting and training services
to districts. Current interests
include variable retention applications;
the ecology and silviculture
of redcedar and yellow cedar;
implications of single-tree
and small-opening logging and
the influence of management
systems on coastal ecosystems.
