MapView version 6
Mapview Version 6 is finally ready for production (we hope!). There are quite a few changes that we hope will improve Mapview. This is now the SSL compliant version so it has a new URL. In addition, we have moved back to our own server so we are hoping it will be a bit faster and much more stable. The direct URL is
https://apps.gov.bc.ca/ext/mapvunix/
Links from the GEOBC web page and the MOF web page and direct links from applications like FTA and RESULTS will be updated to reflect this during the week of July 13. There is a new manual that documents the changes. A brief summary of the changes is:
The new Job Tab has been created that allows users to quickly do Compliance and Enforcement tasks in Mapview (Section 16 of the manual). This is really more of a place holder at this point but funding permitting, we will be adding more specialized queries and reports.
New tools have been created:
· The Select Menu tool (Section 7.14 of the new Manual)· The Select By Radius tool· Upload Layer from GPS file (Section 8.10)
We are now using the iMap Shape file upload tool so the limits have been drastically increased. There are still some hiccups in the IMF environment so this change won’t take full effect for a couple more weeks.
The 3D mode icon has been changed (section 10). There have also been some significant improvements in Microsoft’s imagery. This tool still requires use of a plug in. Unmanaged government workstations can install this but managed workstations still require an iStore request or 90 minute admin authority. WTS is still working on packaging the current version of the control so if you need an iStore request to install the plugin, please wait for an app bulletin indicating there is a new release available. If you get 90 minute admin authority just start mapview normally and click on the 3D prompt. When you get to the prompt that asks about installing just click OK.
The FSP Job Tab has been updated adding a Query Features folder with 2 FDU queries.
The following layers have been added or modified in this release:
Admin Boundaries Agricultural Land Reserves - Lines Agricultural Land Reserves - Colour Filled Cadastre - Private/Crown (ICF and Survey Parcels) Fisheries Sensitive Watersheds Trapline Boundaries
Base Map CWB Water management Points of Diversion Planning Forest Development Units Approved Forest Development Units Previous Forest Development Units Draft Forest Development Units Submitted Forest Development Units Identified Areas Approved Identified Areas Draft Identified Areas Submitted Identified Areas
Land Cover Vegetation Small Label Vegetated Land Cover - Projected Age Vegetated Land Cover - Projected Height Vegetated Land cover - Outlined Non-Vegetated Land Cover - Colour Themed Non-Vegetated Land Cover - Outlined
Silviculture Openings Free Growing Openings Not Free Growing Planting Forest Cover Inventory Forest Cover Silviculture Forest Cover Reserve
Forest Health 2007 Pest Information + several new pest type layers for each year 1999-2007
Wildlife Wildlife Habitat Area by Species Ungulate Winter Range by Species
The following Project Orthophotos have been added to the Layers List:
Arrow Dawson Kootenay Prince George Campbell River Fort Nelson Mackenzie Quesnel Cariboo Headwaters Nadina Rocky Mountain Cascade James North Island Skeena Chilcotin Kalum Okanagan Sunshine Columbia Kamloops Peace Vanderhoof
The new image layers are project only and not full coverage of BC. We do not like using these as they create a lot of confusion but it appears to be the only way to get the most current imagery.
The 2006 Natural Color UTM 11 layer has been added to the MR SID layer (although despite the name, it is displayed in Albers).
The Cut Block Search has been added under the Navigation tab (Section 4)
The following Feature Search types have been added to the Feature Search tool: Special Use Permits Identified Areas Forest Development Units Licence to Cut
Numerous changes have been done to the Vegetation, Tenure, and Silviculture Job tabs to the Query Features, Identify, and Select then Report on functions.
As usual, please report any problems to either the help desk or the Mapview Exchange ID.
Brian and Eric.
