To manage forests sustainably, our suite of management practices must recognize the
diversity of ecosystems and resource management objectives in the province. Forest
Renewal BC’s Enhanced Forestry Program supports the identification and achievement
of habitat and biodiversity objectives by investing in studies to investigate:
- the effects of incremental silviculture practices on wildlife habitat and
biodiversity; and,
- how to achieve habitat and biodiversity objectives at the stand and landscape
level.
With funding from the Forest Renewal BC Enhanced Forestry Program, the
Ministries of Forests (MOF) and Environment, Lands, and Parks (MELP) develop
knowledge and tools to assist resource managers in addressing habitat and
biodiversity objectives.
This Website contains a draft monitoring framework to assess the effectiveness
of incremental silviculture treatments in maintaining habitat and ecosystem
functions and diversity. The framework complements existing planning and monitoring
activities. Resource managers can demonstrate the achievement of habitat and
biodiversity objectives by incorporating relevant portions of the framework into
their management practices.
This Website also contains results of studies on the impacts of enhanced forestry
and backlog reforestation activities on habitat and biodiversity.
Future studies will investigate the potential of various stand tending activities
to improve or create habitat features for various species of wildlife. Existing
guidelines for developing habitat and biodiversity objectives will be reviewed and
synthesized into a provincial document. A revised framework and results of specific
studies are expected to be available on the EFP Virtual Resource Centre by spring 2001.
