Stand Tending
Training Reports Software Other
Stand tending activities such as spacing, pruning, fertilization, and commercial
thinning are a key component of Forest Renewal BC's Enhanced Forestry Program.
They aim to increase the volume and/or value of British Columbia's second growth
forests. To guide these activities for maximum benefit, BC's first incremental
silviculture strategy was developed in 1999 (See Silviculture Decisions).
Achieving forest management objectives for timber and non-timber resources at the
stand level depends on the development of sound Stand Management Prescriptions
(SMPs) and the successful implementation of selected stand tending activities.
In implementing an SMP, well-designed treatment operations will enhance results,
providing greater assurance that desired timber supply will be achieved while
protecting the environment.
The Ministry of Forests supports the EFP by developing stand tending training to
enhance the knowledge of those developing SMPs and implementing treatments.
To meet the increasing demand for more participant driven training, stand tending
course materials are now available from the Internet. These courses provide the
"How-to's" of planning and implementing these activities and cover: project
planning, contract administration (tendering, awarding, monitoring, and payment),
activity layout, equipment and use of equipment, work quality, worker safety, and
monitoring.
This Website includes training materials and other products that provide information
on stand density, wood quality, and how to carry out stand tending activities.
While these materials are useful in their own right, for maximum value, it is
recommended participants attend a full training session with a qualified instructor.
Please contact Ralph Winter (250) 387-8906,
ralph.winter@gems9.gov.bc.ca, for a list of qualified instructors.
The courses featured on this site were developed with funding from Forest
Renewal BC.
