Partial Cutting
Training Reports Software Other
Partial cutting is a key component of the many silvicultural systems available for
managing British Columbia's forest resources. The use of partial cutting can create
opportunities for harvest where not otherwise feasible, provide jobs, and manage for
a variety of other resource objectives.
Forest Renewal BC's Enhanced Forestry Program has been investigating the use of
partial cutting for innovation in forest practices. In particular, this program
has sought opportunities for the use of partial cutting in enhancing environmental
and social values. Partial cutting can be the solution to meeting biodiversity
objectives, with timber harvest as a secondary by-product.
Partial cutting involves factors not considered with conventional clear-cut
systems and, therefore, requires more analysis. Decision-making for partial
cutting points out the importance of clear objectives. Options are based on
stand data as well as objectives. An understanding of the variety of stand
structural options available with partial cutting can assist in meeting these objectives.
This site contains an introductory online training course in silvicultural
systems, as well as information on training available in partial cutting
prescription development and harvest planning. From this site, you can also
obtain the results of studies that examine the potential of partial cutting
to meet resource objectives such as biodiversity and visual quality, as well
as timber harvesting objectives.
The courses and studies featured on this site were developed with funding from
Forest Renewal BC.
