Natural resource managers developing and approving silviculture treatment prescriptions
use decision support tools to maximize the quality of these plans and their
subsequent return on investment. Growth and Yield (G & Y) tools are
the primary decision support tools used to predict future stand conditions.
These tools can then be used to drive silvicultural investment analyses.
Growth and Yield decision support tools are advancing rapidly and becoming more
numerous and increasingly complex. Traditionally, silvicultural investments were
based solely on the basis of the expected gross timber volume. Incorporating an
economic analysis with estimates of lumber recovery and wood quality will often
lead to radically different investment decisions. These estimates are based on a
thorough understanding of growth and yield expected from various stand treatments.
Growth and yield models for silviculture investment provide an opportunity to
evaluate alternate stand treatments using both a site productivity component and
economic analysis.
The proper tool selection, application and interpretation are critical to making qualified
stand management prescriptions and silviculture prescriptions that meet desired future stand
conditions.
