Silviculture Decisions

To improve the future quantity and quality of both timber and habitat supply, foresters need information and tools to guide wise investment decisions. Recent improvements in site productivity information, growth and yield modelling, and forest level planning have provided the tools for undertaking a significant strategic planning initiative. Beginning in 1998, the Forest Renewal BC Enhanced Forestry Program has been investing in strategic silviculture planning for Crown forest land in British Columbia.

With this funding, the Ministry of Forests has developed guiding principles for silviculture strategic planning in the province (Interim Provincial Incremental Silviculture Strategy), and a standard process for identifying silviculture budgets and goals. The guiding principles are being used to develop more comprehensive management unit strategies, using existing TSR and other data. In-depth forest level analyses are being developed for various management units. The in-depth analyses will provide sound investment plans that incorporate timber, non-timber, and socio-economic objectives.

This information will assist industry and government decision makers to strategically select silvicultural regimes and treatments such as partial cutting, commercial thinning, tree improvement, stand density management, and managing for habitat supply. Collectively, the strategies arising from this initiative will be key inputs guiding future funding allocations and treatment activities.

This Website includes the provincial strategy for incremental silviculture, provincial and ecosystem reports, a PrognosisBC support center, and training materials to assist in making sound silviculture investment decisions.

In addition, the Ministry of Forests also provides training in timber supply and economic analysis to augment decision-making skills at the forest and stand level. Training in these areas will enhance one's ability to do forest level analysis and contribute meaningfully to future timber supply reviews or analyses. Also visit the Growth and Yield business area to view other training opportunities and decision aids available to improve decision-making skills.

The courses, studies, and other products featured on this site were developed with funding from Forest Renewal BC.
