Community Trust Improves McBride's Recreation Options December 19 – Forest workers employed through the Job Opportunities Program work on a trail in McBride Community Forest. The $113,520 project also includes improvements to hiking and snowmobile trails as well as the construction and installation of a kiosk, boardwalks and other infrastructure. College of New Caledonia Planer Mill Upgrade December 12 – College of New Caledonia president John Bowman receives a $50,000 cheque from Minister Bell and Prince George-Mount Robson MLA Shirley Bond for a planer upgrade that will improve training and help research the use of terahertz rays in sawmill processing. TruckSafe Identification Plates Program December 12 – Minister Bell helps the Vehicle Identification Number Plates Program announce a new online registry feature that will improve road safety by making it easier to identify and report unsafe driving of forestry vehicles and logging trucks.
B.C. Company Turns Wood Waste into Bioenergy December 5 - Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell meets with representatives from Pine Star Logging and Pacific BioEnergy at Norman Lake. Pine Star is grinding wood waste for Pacific BioEnergy’s wood pellet market after investing $750,000 in a new machine. Province Honours B.C.’s Oldest Living Forester November 27 – Lorne Swanell, the province’s oldest living forester, at 100 years, was honoured with the creation of a $1,500 bursary to the University of Northern British Columbia’s Ecological Science and Management program in his name. MOU Signing Ceremony with Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs November 14 – Robert Wright, Canadian Ambassador to China; KANG Peng, Director General, Division of International Cooperation, Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs; and Pat Bell, B.C. Minister of Forests and Range sign a memorandum of understanding for wood-frame projects to help China rebuild following earthquake devastation. Community Trust Funds Prince George Trail Improvements November 10 – Prince George receives $166,411 through the Job Opportunities Program to improve safety on the Cranbrook Hill Greenway trails. Minister Bell is joined by city councillors Murry Krause and Sherry Sethen, Mayor Colin Kinsley, city councillors Don Basserman and Shirley Graton, and Deputy Premier, Minister of Education, Shirley Bond to mark the occasion. Harmac's New Owners Celebrate November 6 – Minister Bell helps Gerry Tellier and Jim Shaw cut the ribbon on the first bale turned out since the Harmac workers took over ownership of the Nanaimo pulp mill. The unionized workers put together a business plan that saw each of them invest to become shareholders in their own company. On the Ground in Quesnel October 22 – Canfor representatives and Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell in the field to view logging operations in a Quesnel-area cutblock.
