The objective of stock type selection is to choose, based on speces, site conditions, planned silvicultural treatments and experience, what seedling characteristics will best suit a particular site.

A stock type is a seedling of a specific size as defined by the physical characteristics of the container in which it is grown, and by its age in growing seasons. This website and the accompanying Provincial Seedling Stock Type Selection and Ordering Guidelines provide much of the information needed to make a successful stock type selection for British Columbia forest sites.

The First Step.

Before you choose a stock type, you must select the appropriate species for the site. The productivity, reliability, ease of establishment and forest health concerns of the species on the site are important for long-term success. The Establishment to Free Growing Guidebooks are the source documents for making appropriate species selections. When the reforestation species have been chosen, you can begin the process of selecting the stock type.

Why is stock type selection important?

The selection of stock types is an important element in the regeneration process because the stock type chosen directly influences the survival and performance of a plantation. Selection of an appropriate stock type can help to minimize the effects of site limiting factors on the establishment and early growth of seedlings. Choosing the right stock type can also significantly decrease the time required to satisfy free growing obligations and green-up requirements.

What information is needed to make a stock type selection?

Selection of a stock type is a biologically and economically crucial phase in the regeneration process. Silviculturists can exert control over the morphology of the seedlings they receive through the selection process. The diversity of stock types available provides silviculturists with a set of tools for dealing with a wide range of reforestation situations. Many factors, including knowledge of harvesting, site factors, site preparation, nursery culture, seedling biology, field logistics, future stand tending practices, and other resource uses must be understood and considered to make the best stock type choice.

When is the stock type chosen?

Selection of a stock type should be made at the pre-harvest planning stage. This encourages the prompt regeneration of sites. Stock type selection should also be kept in mind during post-harvest and plantability inspections. Any revisions to the selection should be made prior to the submission or confirmation of the sowing request. Remember that you are not the only person who has had to select stock for a planting site. Check with others to find out what they have used, why they used it, how they used it, and what happened. For more information, contact your regional reforestation forester or nursery services staff.

It is important to remember that growing your stock takes time, one or two growing seasons. It is critical that you plan your seedling needs accordingly to ensure they can be delivered on time.
