Site-limiting factors

It is not often that only one stock type will work; there is usually a choice of acceptable stock types for a given species/site combination. At the environmental extremes, stock type selection becomes critical. Appropriate selection involves choosing a stock type with characteristics that will allow the seedling to survive and flourish despite the site-limiting factors.

Although a single factor may be considered limiting, a seedling weakened by one may become prone to stress from others. There are potentially many limiting factors. Stock type selection is not capable of addressing every factor. Moreover, without appropriate silvicultural treatments (e.g., site preparation), stock type selection alone may not be sufficient to alleviate a site-limiting factor.
