Inventory Projection

Models

The main purpose of the Inventory Projection (IP) group is to provide the necessary tools and support required to predict the values a number of important forest stand parameters, such as volume, for both current and future stand conditions.

The IP group developed the Variable Density Yield Prediction (VDYP) model which has been used since 1993 to project (or grow) the provincial inventory and to create yield tables for use in the Timber Supply Review process. VDYP is a whole stand empirical yield model which was designed to predict the average yield of unmanaged naturally regenerated forests.

Over the years a number of improvements have been made to VDYP and in 1999 work was commenced on a major revision and refitting. The new version (VDYP7) is a growth and yield model incorporating the growth information collected from permanent sample plots, it is expected to be released for testing in 2006.

The Ministry of Forests and Range website can provide more information on growth and yield models
