VDYP 7 Background

Q
Who developed VDYP7 and when was it developed?

A
Ministry of Forests and Range staff along with J.S. Thrower & Associates in 1998 started to develop this new model. Jim Flewelling , PhD in consultation with Ministry staff wrote the Core module and completed it in 2002. The Blue Denim Consulting Group in consultation with Ministry staff completed both the interactive WinVDYP7 interface in 2005 and the Attribute Adjustment and console interfaces in 2006.

Q
What is the difference between VDYP6 and VDYP7?

A
There are many differences, but the most important is that VDYP7 uses basal area and number of stems (trees per hectare) as measures of stand density in predicting volume, while VDYP6 used crown closure to achieve the same purpose. The BEC system is used in VDYP7 to group growth and yield functions whereas VDYP6 used the old Forest Inventory Zone (FIZ) system.

Q
What is the LRDW and how is it used by VDYP7?

A
The LRDW is the Land and Resource Data Warehouse which is the corporate inter-ministry mechanism to store and access all provincial spatial data such as VRI files, TRIM files, etc. The relevance to VDYP7 is that it stores the input attributes used.

Q
What are the interfaces of VDYP7?

A

The four interfaces of VDYP7 are:

  • WinVDYP7 – Is an interactive interface that can generate a yield table for one polygon, when inputs are provided in an MS Windows environment.

  • VDYP7 Console – Uses .csv format files to process multiple groups of map sheets up to the whole province. This application works in a single step (contrast to VDYP7 Attribute Adjustment) to generate yield tables using inputs from adjusted and unadjusted inventories.

  • VDYP7 Attribute Adjustment – In this interface, adjustment factors are generated by specified strata, then the factors are used to adjust attributes for all polygons in the population. The process involves extracting data from the corporate data base (VRIMS) in the form of personal geo-databases, analyzing it and passing it back to VRIMS in a prescribed form.

  • VDYP7 in VRIMS – Projects the management unit inventories in the province annually.
