It was repeatedly stated, verbally and in writing, that evaluating timber supply is difficult while other government initiatives are underway such as the Forest Practices Code, the Commission on Resources and Environment (CORE), and the Protected Areas Strategy. There was unanimous agreement among the respondents that these initiatives should be completed and followed by a reassessment of the timber supply.
Several respondents suggested that reform of the tenure system was needed to encourage small-scale stewardship to ensure environmentally sound forest management. Others advocated the establishment of more protected areas to achieve this goal.
