Provincial economy and revenues

Of the current harvest, 90 per cent is processed in British Columbia, creating approximately 54 person-years of local employment and a total of 330 person-years of provincial employment each year. The remaining 10 per cent of the harvest is exported as round logs to Korea, Japan and the United States. (SEA page 24)

Approximately $14.8 million in provincial revenues are generated annually by timber harvesting in the North Coast Timber Supply Area. This figure is based on the average total fees for harvesting public timber in the area ($10.93 per cubic metre) plus personal income taxes and other tax revenues such as corporate income tax, sales tax, etc. (SEA page 31).

These estimates were developed before the Forest Renewal Plan was announced and do not include the increased stumpage revenues that will be generated through this plan. While stumpage revenues are expected to increase by as much as 80 per cent, it will not be possible to accurately estimate the impact of this change until the new policy has been implemented for a period of time.
