In addition to employment within the timber supply area, the current allowable annual cut is estimated to generate a total of 4,106 person-years of employment outside the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area, including 887 person-years of direct forestry employment. Approximately 70 to 80 per cent of the logging and silvicultural activities are completed by independent contractors from outside the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area. In total, harvesting and processing timber from the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area generates approximately 6,500 person-years of employment throughout the province. (SEA page 38)
In 1994, timber harvesting within the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area generated approximately $82.1 million in stumpage, taxes and other government revenues. This figure is based on the average total fees for harvesting public timber in the area ($14.19 per cubic metre based on information from 1994), plus estimated personal income taxes and other tax revenues of $13.89 per cubic metre. These estimates include the increased stumpage being generated to fund the Forest Renewal Plan. (SEA page 39)
