First Nations

The three First Nations in the timber supply area (the Stl’atl’imx, the Nl’aka’pamux and the Shuswap) include 13 bands. Approximately 2,700 people reside in First Nations communities in the timber supply area, mainly near Lillooet and Lytton. Many are employed in the forest sector, either as employees or independent contractors; about 35 per cent of the mill employees in the timber supply area are First Nations people. (SEA page 11)

First Nations people pursue many of the traditional, cultural and spiritual uses of the land in this timber supply area. At the same time, the First Nations are interested in the long-term prosperity of the forest industry. Treaty negotiations are a means of resolving these issues.
