Provincial economy and revenues

Processing of timber, chips and lumber shipped outside the Kalum-South area and employment generated by spending outside the area is estimated to create a total of 514 person-years of additional employment in the province. In total, forestry activities in the southern portion of the Kalum Forest District, including the two tree farm licences, have generated approximately 1565 person-years of employment in the province, 88 per cent of which is created in the Kalum-South area.

In addition, approximately $7.2 million in provincial revenues are generated annually by timber harvesting in the Kalum-South area. This figure is based on the average total fees for harvesting public timber in the area ($2.26 per cubic metre based on 1993 information), plus estimated personal income taxes and other tax revenues of $12.69 per cubic metre. These estimates were developed before the new Forest Renewal Plan was announced and do not include the increased stumpage revenues that will be generated through this plan. While, on a provincial basis, stumpage revenues are expected to increase by as much as 80 per cent, it will not be possible to accurately estimate the impact of this change until the new policy has been in place for a period of time.
