Provincial economy and revenues

In the past five years, virtually all of the timber harvested in the Bulkley Timber Supply Area has been processed by local mills; only wood chips are shipped out to pulp and paper operations. It is estimated that a total of 2,004 person-years of employment are created within the province, including employment within the timber supply area
(SEA page 34).

Approximately $20 million in provincial revenue is generated annually by timber harvesting in the Bulkley Timber Supply Area, based on 1992 data. This figure comes from a per-cubic-metre rate of $10.62 for stumpage and rent, $6.40 for personal income tax, and $5.80 for other taxes (SEA page 36). These estimates were developed before the new Forest Renewal Plan was announced and do not include the increased stumpage revenues that will be generated through this plan. While stumpage revenues are expected to increase by as much as
80 per cent, it will not be possible to accurately estimate the impact of this change until the new policy has been in place for a period of time.
