Cone and seed improvement

Cone and Seed Improvement flow chartThis section of the web site will focus on the extension of information from the Cone and Seed Improvement program at the Tree Seed Centre. The primary scope of the program is the Seed Handling System that spans all activities from the identification of cone crops to sowing and initial seedling growth in the nursery. Emphasis is on planting with conifer seedlings, but some information on angiosperms and natural regeneration will also be presented. Articles will be arranged into three categories with some cross-referencing provided:

  1. Species specific information
  2. Topical Information
  3. Quality Assurance program
  4. Tree Seed Working Group

Each section or sub-section will include a list of articles relevant to the subject area. This is not an exhaustive literature review, but a sampling of relevant articles. The intent is to provide a centralized depot for unpublished information, trial reports, meeting presentations and newsletter articles produced by the Cone and Seed Improvement program. Many articles were produced in co-operation and discussion with Tree Seed Centre staff, colleagues, clients, Universities and others with an interest in seed science and technology. Comments or footnotes will be added to older articles indicating how our understanding of topics has changed over time. We hope you find these pages informative and feedback on existing or new topics is welcomed.

The Anatomy & Morphology of Conifer Tree Seed and the Seed Handling Guidebook are both virtually out of print. They are both available here as pdf documents that you can view online or print. I am planning on updating and improving the Anatomy & Morphology of Conifer Tree Seed (1997) publication over the next three to five years. The Seed Handling Guidebook (2001) describes the scope of the Cone and Seed Improvement program from cone collection to nursery sowing. There are no immediate plans to update this publication. Comments are appreciated on improvements to either document.
