FIA-Provincial Tree Improvement Program

The Tree Improvement Program is an operational investment plan for the management of the genetic resources of the Province sponsored by the Forest Investment Account (FIA). The program focuses on improving the public forest asset base by supporting the development and availability of genetically well-adapted, high quality reforestation material from natural sources and through the conservation of our forest gene resources. The Forest Genetics Council (FGC) of British Columbia, appointed by B.C.'s Provincial Chief Forester guides tree improvement activities in the province. The Council represents the numerous stakeholders in the province involved with gene resource management who set the goals and objectives, and oversees the development and delivery of business plans needed to fulfil them. The annual FGC Business Plan outlines the activities and budgets of the seven subprograms that constitute the provincial forest gene resource management program.

Objectives:

The objectives of the Tree Improvement Program are:

  • Double the average volume gain (genetic worth) of select seed used from 6% to 12% by 2007
  • Increase select seed use to 75% of the total provincial sowing by 2007
  • Manage a gene conservation program to maintain genetic diversity in commercial tree species.
  • Identify and fund the long-term production capability required to meet the Forest Genetics Council's Business Plan priorities.
  • Monitor Progress in all aspects of gene resource management.
