Ministry Use Policy

There are two different ways to get SiteTools:

Download
Go to our Software Registration and Download page to download SiteTools.

MoF Data Delivery System
This option is available to Ministry employees only. Contact your systems administrator for more information about the Data Delivery System (DDS).

Installation

You can download installation instructions at the same time as you download the application.

 

Register Here

We recommend that all users use our Software Registration and Download page to add your email address to our distribution list. Once you have registered, you will receive notices of new software products, updates, bug alerts, and related information. Note that you will receive notices for all available software, not just the software that you choose to download. Registration is not mandatory.

 

System Requirements

Hardware

Before installing SiteTools, please ensure that your computer meets the following minimum hardware requirements:

  • a Pentium-class PC
  • a minimum of 8 MB of random access memory (RAM)
  • 4 MB of free disk space on your hard drive, and 3 MB more if you have downloaded the self-extracting installation file

SiteTools prints to the default Windows printer. Use the Setup option in the Print dialog box to select the printer of your choice. When you print a table that is fairly wide, some columns may not appear in your output (i.e. are not being printed). You should reduce the font size to accommodate these wider tables. Changing the Orientation to Landscape in the Print Setup dialog box may also help.

Operating System

Before installing SiteTools, please ensure that your computer meets the following minimum software requirement:

  • 32-bit operating system Microsoft Windows 95 or better, or Windows NT/XP.

Systems Configuration

See the installation instructions for information about Ministry of Forests systems configurations where SiteTools has been successfully installed and tested (Ministry of Forests NT 4 configuration and XP Configuration 2).

 

Version History

A summary of the main SiteTools revisions and updates is listed below.

1985-1989
A DOS program called GRAFLEX was develop to plot site index curves, growth and yield data, and to generate tables.

1990
A DOS program called "Freddie" was developed by Ken Polsson of the Research Branch. It was primarily used to produce site index tables in several forms for convenient use, and also to calculate site index for large data files containing height and age in batch mode.

1991
The Ministry designated a recommended site index and height growth curve for each species.

1990-1993
A dynamic link library file called Sindex.DLL was developed and commonly used to calculate site index and height growth by other growth and yield applications, eg. TASS, TIPSY, VDYP, FAN$Y, and Stand Sample Compiler.

1995
Research Branch began the development of a Microsoft Windows version to parallel the MS-DOS version of Freddie.

1996
Freddie was renamed to SiteTools 3.0 for DOS.

1998
SiteTools 3.1 for Windows was first released, and SiteTools 3.1 for DOS was last updated.

2000
SiteTools 3.2 for Windows was released.

2004
SiteTools 3.3 for Windows was released.

 

Ministry of Forests Use Policy for SiteTools

The Research Branch of the Ministry of Forests developed and maintains SiteTools. The Province of British Columbia has the copyright. SiteTools is distributed free of charge at the discretion of the Ministry. SiteTools contains the default site index curves used by the B.C. Ministry of Forests in timber supply analysis.

SiteTools includes the file Sindex.DLL that contains all the code for handling site index and height growth equations. This DLL file is used other Ministry growth and yield applications, eg. TASS, TIPSY, VDYP, FAN$Y, and Stand Sample Compiler.
