- A comparison of manual brushing treatments in the ICHdw at Redfish Creek: 10-year results from blocks 10-13.

nd spring ungulate habitat, and can be important as a source of domestic water. As a result of these resource uses and public pressure, herbicides are rarely used for controlling competition to tree regeneration. The Redfish Creek Manual Brushing study was established in 1987 by Roger Whitehead of the Canadian Forest Service. The primary objectives of this research trial were to examine the cost effectiveness and productivity of motorized manual brushing treatments (Holmsen and Whitehead 1988) and to compare conifer and vegetation response to multiple motor-manual brushing treatments. This extension note summarizes the 1997 remeasurement of conifer and vegetation response data collected from blocks 10-13 (Figure 1). These blocks are adjacent to each other and provide a field demonstration of a range of brushing treatments. The objectives of the 1997 remeasurement were to compare brushing treatment vegetation, stocking, and conifer response 10 years after trial establishment. A more detailed report ...

http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/0774.htm
This guide contains photographs or drawings of 129 of the most common and characteristic native plants (excluding trees) of the Sub-Boreal Spruce Biogeoclimatic Zone of British Columbia. Habitat information in the form of an edatopic grid accompanies each of these species. Nineteen groups of silhouettes composed of 95 plants are included. Forty-five of the species in the silhouette groupings are additional to those pictured in photographs or drawings. A checklist of the known flora of the zone, along with an index of common and scientific names for the species illustrated are provided. The guide is intended primarily for foresters, forest technicians and range managers. ...

e to lotic ecosystems (actively moving water), Most of the research conducted has focused on contrasting extremes (e.g., comparing very heavy grazing to an ungrazed control), Appropriate levels of livestock use that maintain good-quality riparian habitat are difficult to quantify, Effects of livestock grazing in riparian areas on wildlife habitat are variable (grazing creates or enhances some wildlife habitat, while eliminating or degrading other wildlife habitat), Riparian areas and the effects of livestock grazing have not been studied adequately at a landscape level. ...

- Seral Stages across Forested Landscapes: Relationships to Biodiversity
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1215.htm
Various plants and animals rely on different forest ecosystem "stages" to meet their habitat needs. Grizzly bears, for example, can range over hundreds of square kilometres in search of the food resources available in open and young forests before hibernating deep in mature forests. Some plant species can only develop on open, treeless, freshly disturbed sites, while certain canopy-dwelling insects spend their entire lifetime on the broad lichen- and moss-covered limbs of a single ancient spruce. During spring and summer, deer may sample tender herbs in clearcut areas, but, in severe winters, retreat several kilometres to protective old-growth stands. Landscapes and the ecosystems that compose them "age" through time. The process of forest aging called "succession" transforms the composition of forested ecosystems as biotic communities respond to and modify their environment. Succession is an important topic in landscape ecology because of its significant effects on landscape diversity and the subseque ...
- Carnation Creek and Queen Charlotte Islands Fish/Forestry Workshop: Applying 20 Years of Coast Research to Management Solutions.
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1230.htm
Two major studies of fish/forestry interactions have been conducted in coastal British Columbia over the last 25 years. The Carnation Creek Experimental Watershed Program, located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, began in 1970 and is currently the longest-running investigation of the effects of forestry practices on a coastal stream ecosystem in North America. The second initiative, the Fish/Forestry Interaction Program (FFIP) on the Queen Charlotte Islands, began in 1981. About 30 watersheds were included within this program which focused on the effects of landslides on channel morphology and fish habitat, as well as on watershed rehabilitation techniques and silvicultural treatments. Both studies were conducted in similar environments, but each used a different experimental design. The case-study and synoptic approaches have together provided an opportunity to understand ecological responses both over very long time periods and for diverse geographic conditions and logging histories. The purpose of ...
- Assessment of the Condition of Small Fish-bearing Streams in the Central Interior
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1237.htm
Plateau of British Columbia in Response to Riparian Practices Implemented under the Forest Practices Code. The condition of small fish bearing streams (Forest Practices Code class S4) in the central interior of British Columbia was assessed to determine the effects of riparian forest harvest practices implemented under the B.C. Forest Practices Code. The purpose of the survey was to determine: How frequently are the different types of streamside harvesting practices implemented? Do the different types of streamside harvesting practices meet the objectives of the Riparian Management Area Guidebook? and Do the different types of streamside harvesting practices result in apparent impacts to fish habitat? The survey investigated the extent of forest harvesting potentially affecting small fish-bearing streams, the prevalent riparian silviculture treatments and levels of tree retention, the evidence for stream channel disturbance after forest harvesting, the degree of shade loss over the s ...

- Adapting Forest Management to the Impacts of Climate Change in Canada.
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1390.htm
This report identifies a range of ways that climate change may impact human and economic systems (e.g. market impacts, land use change, availability and cost of raw material supply, change in habitat and our ability to preserve ecosystems in fixed boundary parks, etc). It does not however focus on the role of Canadian forests in sequestering carbon, as this has been covered in detail elsewhere. The report also considers factors that may influence our capacity to adapt. These factors include inherent features and properties of social systems (such human capital and social capital), policy and institutional factors, and awareness and processes by which risk perceptions are socially constructed. The ultimate goal is to isolate the most vulnerable systems and regions, and to understand why these systems and regions are vulnerable so that impacts of climate change on vulnerable elements of Canadian society can be reduced. This report provides a synthesis of conceptual approaches that can be used to assess vulne ...
- Garry Oak (
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1425.htm
This poster was displayed at a Garry Oak symposium and used to advise ecologists of a 2007 field guide (Technical Report 040) titled "Garry Oak (Quercus garryana) Plant Communities in British Columbia: A Guide to Identification". Technical Report 040 covers the native plant communities with a component of Garry oak (Quercus garryana) in British Columbia. The purpose of the guide is to standardize the use of plant communities in conservation and recovery of the Garry oak habitat, and thus to move toward an ecosystem approach. Standardized communities can provide a basis for mapping and inventory. The guide is also intended to provide targets for Garry oak habitat restoration, and could help identify reference communities, which are then monitored to detect long-term ecological trends. ...
